What Is A MIPI Camera Module?

The MIPI camera modules are commonly found in mobile phones and tablets, and supports high resolution of more than 5 mega pixels. Full name of MIPI is “Mobile Industry Processor Interface “, which is divided into MIPI DSI and MIPI CSI, corresponding to video display and video input standards respectively. At present, MIPI camera modules are widely used in embedded products, such as dashcams, law enforcement instruments, high-definition miniature cameras, network surveillance cameras, etc.

MIPI alliance, Mobile Industry Processor Interface (MIPI) alliance. MIPI is an open standard and specification for mobile application processors initiated by the MIPI Alliance. The camera interface of MIPI is called CSI and the display interface of MIPI is called DSI.

MIPI is differential serial transmission, fast speed, anti-interference. Mainstream mobile phone modules are now using MIPI transmission, transmission using four pairs of differential signal transmission image data and a pair of differential clock signal. Originally designed to reduce the number of connections between the LCD screen and the main control chip, it has since moved to high-speed, high-resolution displays, which are now mostly MIPI interfaces.

The MIPI camera module has three power supplies: VDDIO (IO power), AVDD (analog power), and DVDD (core digital power). The power supply of the camera varies with different sensor modules. AVDD is available in 2.8V or 3.3V. The DVDD generally uses 1.5V or higher, and the designs of different manufacturers vary.

1.5V May be provided by the sensor module or external supply. If external power supply can be used, it is recommended to use external power supply, and the voltage must be higher than that of the internal DVDD. The VDDIO voltage should be consistent with the level of the MIPI signal line. If the signal line is 2.8V, VDDIO should also be supplied to 2.8V. Some sensor modules can also be supplied internally without VDDIO.
